Director Joe Wright

The search for a director to take the reigns of the highly anticipated film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey may soon be over. Two of the most respected entertainment industry trade publications – Variety and The Hollywood Reporter – are both reporting that Joe Wright is the front-runner to direct the high profile project.

Director Gus Van Sant – Actor Alex Pettyfer

Industry insiders at TheWrap are reporting that two-time Oscar nominee Gus Van Sant has shot a steamy sex scene featuring Magic Mike star Alex Pettyfer as Christian Grey in an effort to nab the directing gig for the big screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey

According to insiders, Pettyfer is only in Van Sant's sampler – the Magic Mike star hasn't actually been cast in the film. Apparently the director shot the pivotal scene when Anastasia Steele loses her virginity to Christian Grey. There is no word on who was cast as Anastasia Steele in the scene.

Bill Condon and Erik Odom

Well it looks like there are some new names being thrown around in the search for the director and Christian Grey in the highly anticipated film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. The latest names in the mix are Bill Condon and Erik Odem. The director and actor both have a Twilight connection. Condon directed both Breaking Dawn films, and Odom portrayed the nomadic vampire Patrick in Breaking Dawn Part 2. The pair have found themselves in the center of the Fifty Shades vortex thanks to – what else – Twitter.

David Cronenberg

Last month, we put together a group of 5 directors that we thought had the potential to take the helm of the highly anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation. Acclaimed Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg made our short list and we had good reason. The Villiage Voice once referred to him as "the most audacious and challenging narrative director in the English-speaking world." His films have that ability to delve into society's collective unconscious and dredge up all of the perverse, suppressed desires of modern life - an ideal pedigree for a film like Fifty Shades of Grey.

Bret Easton Ellis

Bret Easton Ellis has been passionate about his interest in writing the big screen adaptation of the best selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey. The American Psycho author has been pushing hard for the screenwriting job over the past couple of months, calling lead character Christian Grey “a writer’s dream” and discussing casting ideas via Twitter.

Fans initially had a mixed reaction to Ellis being involved in the project and producers were staying quiet on the subject when rumours surfaced that he was in serious contention. Well, fans now have an answer. Earlier today Ellis took to his Twitter account to announce he is no longer being considered to write the screenplay for the high profile film.
